WHAT IS POWDER COATING? ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONS

* WHAT IS POWDER COATING?

Powder coating, commonly known as ELECTROSTATIC COATING, was introduced to Vietnam in the 1990s.
- HOW POWDER (ELECTROSTATIC) COATING WORKS:
Powder paint stored in a hopper is drawn out by compressed air and conveyed to the spray gun.
The spray gun has a special design with a high-voltage generator in the gun body, producing up to 100 kV at the gun tip.
As the powder is carried through the gun body by compressed air, it is charged by the high voltage and becomes electrically charged.
The workpiece (usually metal) is earthed and therefore has no charge. The charged powder particles leaving the gun are attracted electrostatically and adhere easily to the workpiece.
Once fully covered with powder, the workpiece enters the curing oven and is heated to 180°C ~ 220°C. At this temperature the powder melts and flows to form a continuous film on the surface. After about 10~15 minutes of curing in the oven, a durable coating film is formed.

* ADVANTAGES OF ELECTROSTATIC POWDER COATING

- Because the paint is a dry powder, no solvent is used, so powder coating does not pollute the surrounding environment with solvents.
- Powder coating needs only a single coat, making it more cost-effective than traditional liquid (solvent-based) paint.
- The coating is formed by high-temperature curing, giving the finished surface excellent mechanical and physical properties.
- Because the process uses electrostatic attraction to make the powder adhere to the surface, it requires less operator skill and is easy to automate.

* APPLICATIONS OF ELECTROSTATIC POWDER COATING

- CONSUMER PRODUCTS:
+ Powder coating is used on almost all consumer products made of steel, such as tables, chairs, beds, cabinets, shelving, bicycles, motorcycles, lamps …
+ It is especially used as a protective coating for outdoor products such as gates, doors, fences, railings, stairs, aluminium frames, aluminium doors ….
- INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS:
+ Powder coating is widely used to protect machine parts and industrial and construction equipment, such as scaffolding, steel structures, working platforms, machine tools …
+ It is also used to coat machinery operating in environments with corrosive chemical vapours.
